I have a tattered copy of this book which "made" me buy it in 1976 while I was studying art at university. It is a beautiful mind-opening and altering exercise for any neophyte tasting eastern philosophy. It opened doors of possibility and changed the manner in which I viewed reality and the world. It caused me to continue the search within for spiritual awareness and is still a revered tome that I return to these long and sometimes tumultuous twenty one years later. I love Ram Dass for his enthusiasm and perseveration.

I agree with J.M.'s evaluation of this book. I read it when it first came out in '71, during a very bad time in my life, and it cracked open my brain. It's one of those books that, if you're ready, will spark insights, as Jon has already said. In my case these insights were transformative. The style is spare, simple, direct and full of light and clarity. Truly a book of its time, the revolutionary sixties and early seventies, but everything in it is still valid today.

I borrowed a dog-eared copy of this book from a friend
fifteen years ago, read it avidly, and am still living through
the fallout of the insights that it sparked off.
