The author, Mikaya Heart , October 29, 1998 explains why she wrote the book and what it offers.
When I told people I was writing this book a couple of them said "Don't you think enough has been written on the subject of sex?" Enough? If everyone in the world wrote about sex from their own personal viewpoint, that still wouldn't be enough because we'd all be inspired to write more when we read what other people had written. This book is the result of years of conversations and ruminations (and hands-on research, of course). I wrote it because I wanted to inspire people to think and talk about sex. And, yes, to do it, do it more, do it in a more intensely present and loving way than they ever thought possible. I believe very few of us are really aware of the potentials of depth and intimacy that are available to us when we truly open up. We need to embark on a journey of exploration and healing around sex, and an essential part of that process is the willingness to dialogue about it.

Sex can be simple good clean fun, but it can also be the doorway to a profound personal and spiritual awakening. When we allow ourselves to experience the full range of our sexuality we free up limitless stores of energy. But most of us have deep distress and shame around sex, and society gives us so many mixed messages about it that we don't know where to turn. Very often we don't even know that there is any other way to be, because everyone around us is in just the same state of confusion and fear about it as we are. My book offers some paths out of the maze, and some windows into what you may be missing if you don't take your courage into your hands and step out on one of those paths. It includes peronal accounts from the many different women that I have talked with.

I was heterosexual for sixteen years, and I'm now a lesbian. (Did you think that already or does it come as a surprise?) The fact that I am a woman who makes love with women gives me a special insight into women's orgasms: I experience them from two very different angles. It also gives me a vantage point from which to see sex with another eye: an eye that perceives a huge spectrum of often-overlooked possibilities, rather than an act that is defined by intercourse.
