I.G., 1/1/97, An inspiring, powerful reminder that Western masters do exist
I read this book about three months ago, and much of it still quietly percolates through my thoughts and meditations.
The Mystery of Light is an excellent introduction to the life and teachings of the European master Omraam Mikhael Aivanhov. As the Western world continues to explore and discover other spiritual traditions, from aboriginal cultures to Eastern traditions, we are in danger of rejecting the rich Western mystical tradition. Part of the problem is a lack of well-known, modern masters and saints from the West. It's gotten to the point that many spiritual seekers would scoff at the idea of a Caucasian spiritual master.
Aivanhov stands as a bright challene to that notion. His teachings are a powerful blend of esoteric Christianity, yogic philosphy, and alchemy. Although he draws stories and metaphors from a number of traditions, the fundamental unity of his teachings goes well beyond intellectual consistency. He speaks like one who knows.
I've often found myself sitting down to re-read a chapter only to stop after the first few paragraphs. I'll read and sentence and just be nailed to the spot. I keep wanting to savor what he's saying, to comprehend a statement's depth, rather than race through and be able to add another title to my list of read books.
Very highly recommended.
